A Cornish start-up has launched a web application aimed at helping businesses in the UK boost their profile and engage with customers via their mobile phones.

St Austell-based FireText Communications has created a low cost application enabling businesses to send their own branded text-message (SMS) promotions, reminders or customer notifications to potential new and existing customers in an instant.

FireText was set-up by local graduate Dan Parker and his university colleague James Huff, while studying at the University of York to provide SMS team-tracking for the Mongol Rally in 2007.

Since then it has quickly expanded to provide group text services to over 3,000 SCUBA divers in the UK and now hopes to use the concept to help businesses easily send SMS to their customers.

Parker said: “I have spoken to so many businesses in the south west alone that are struggling to find fresh, effective ways to drive new sales or fill empty tables. Text messaging is a real low cost way to get the message across quickly and literally in the hands of your next customer.”
