South west law firm Stephens Scown has created a new team of solicitors to focus on the schools and education sector.

Associate Helen Furneaux will head up the team across the firm’s offices in Exter, Truro and St Austell, advising on such issues as conversion to academy status, employment and staffing issues, dispute resolution, financing and joint ventures.

She said: “The process of turning a typical school into an academy is complex and includes many legal and practical issues. Our new education team will help support head teachers and governors through this process.

“Running a school is an enormous and frequently complicated task – teachers and governors have enough to deal with without having to worry about legal issues. We’ve taken the step of creating a sector-specific group to improve the level of service for our clients by sharing knowledge, connections and experience.”
