Kirstie Allsopp will be the guest speaker for the eighth Cornwall Tourism Awards ceremony at a glittering evening and awards dinner at the Headland Hotel in Newquay on October 15.

Representatives from across a broad range of tourism businesses will flock to the ceremony which is the culmination of the Cornwall Tourism Awards, recognising the very best of tourism practice in the county. The Awards have become the barometer for quality in the tourism sector in Cornwall, with close competition across all aspects of the industry.

Allsopp is no stranger to the West Country, having presented her popular television programme ‘Kirstie’s Homemade Home’ converting a derelict Devon cottage into a haven of tranquillity and comfortable family home. Viewers will also recognise Allsopp as half of the team presenting Location, Location, Location.

She commented: “As someone who owns a holiday cottage I can appreciate, in a small way, all the hard work and effort that goes into running a successful tourism business, especially in times like these. And, of course, I can also appreciate tourism from a holiday maker’s perspective, having spent a wonderful time in Cornwall during the summer with my family. Small children know what they like and fortunately, for me, they love Cornwall!

“So as both a business woman and unstressed mother I think The Cornwall Tourism Awards are important because they encourage and celebrate all that is good in this vital industry. I look forward to congratulating the worthy winners.”

A total of 120 applications have been received for the 2009 awards across 17 categories. Throughout the summer, eagle-eyed undercover judges have been arriving unannounced at each of the leading contenders for the coveted awards, presented each year by VisitCornwall. The shortlists are being finalised and announced. With dozens of establishments, attractions and food providers in contention, the undercover reports into visitors’ real experiences and will play a key role in deciding the winners.

Cornwall’s Gold, Silver and Bronze winners will go on to represent the county in the South West Regional and ultimately the National Excellence Awards.

“The Cornwall Tourism Awards have become a major annual event in the tourism calendar and they give us a wonderful opportunity to recognise and reward the hard work and dedication shown by tourism businesses, large and small, across the county,” said Teresa Timms, PR Manager for VisitCornwall.

Cornwall Toursim Awards are sponsored by a number of eminent business in the county including Cornwall Catering Excellence, Jobline Staffing, Martin Luck, Newquay Fruit Sales, Rodda’s, Newquay Excellence for Training, Brewer and Bunney, Scott Burridge Commercial, Exhibitions South West Ltd, St Austell Brewery, Newquay Cornwall Airport, Cornwall Association of Tourist Attractions, Nixon, Carrier Direct, Graeme and Rust and New Mind.
