Supermarket to buy Heliport land

British International Helicopters (BIH) has agreed to sell its Penzance-based Heliport to supermarket chain Sainsbury’s for redevelopment.

BIH, which operates the air link between mainland Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, will continue to fly out of Penzance until the end of September next year, when it plans to switch services to Lands End airport.

The sale is subject to Sainsbury’s obtaining planning permission for the new store.

BIH first announced its intentions to move operations to Land’s End in 2008, citing economic reasons.

  1. I loathe Sainsbury and Penzance deserves better than a hideous 1970’s orange coloured supermarket. Shamesbury’s indeed. Try something new today; by uplifting Penzance, give them a Waitrose or M&S? Look how well the long overdue M&S at Hayle has been? Tesco & Morrisons are plain scruffy, but suitably sited in that scruffy part (Eastern Green) of Penzance.
