MP for North Cornwall, Dan Rogerson, has branded a £1002 rail ticket from Newquay station as “ridiculous”.

Research by rail expert Barry Doe has revealed that the most expensive rail ticket in the country, costing over £1000, is available for a first class open return ticket from Newquay to Kyle of Lochalsh station in the Scottish Highlands, taking over 20 hours with five changes.

Commenting, Local MP Dan Rogerson said: “British train fares are now the highest in Europe, with ticket prices rising by three times the rate of inflation since the Conservatives botched the privatisation of British Rail in the early 1990s.

“The Government claims that it is committed to encouraging people to use public transport. With rocketing rail prices like these, in sharp contrast to cheap air fares from nearby Newquay Airport, I really must call into question the Government’s commitment to accessible green public transport options in North Cornwall.”
