A popular St Ives coffee shop has been awarded a globally-recognised, sustainable tourism award in recognition of its commitment to being a responsible and environmentally-friendly business.

The Coffee Lounge in St Ives has been awarded a bronze certificate following its first application to the sustainable certification body, Green Tourism. The certificate recognises the popular coffee shop’s efforts at promoting sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic.

A Green Tourism award means that a business works responsibly, ethically and sustainably, contributes to their community, is reducing their impact on the environment and aims to be accessible and inclusive to all visitors and staff.

Coffee Lounge manager, Emma Fashokun, said: “As a community and a business we benefit so much from the beauty of Cornwall. It has always been important to us to play our part in protecting that for future generations. In addition to our plastic-free straws, cups and takeaway packaging we will soon be launching a 100% compostable takeaway cup and we offer a 20 pence discount on takeaway hot drinks for customers who bring a re-usable cup.

“We also work with the local community and Surfers Against Sewage to protect the Cornish coastlines and believe these efforts will be scored particularly well by the assessor.”
