The number of people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly drawing Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) has more than doubled in the past year.

The number of people in the Duchy registered by Government statistics as actively seeking full-time work now stands at 8,102, or 2.6% of the working age population, compared to 3,781 quoted 12 months ago.

However, these figures compare favourably to the rest of the country. The UK average of people claiming JSA stands at 4.1%, and 3% in the south west region.

Of those claiming JSA in Cornwall, 73.9% had been doing so for less than six months. 525 (6.5%) were classified as having been actively seeking work for more than a year, compared to the UK average of 9.1%.
