Council ‘must think again’

Cornwall’s Lib Dem MPs have called for the Council to reconsider its cost cutting measures in the wake of the Local Government Finance Settlement this week.

The Council set out cuts of 10% in its emergency budget, days before Westminster revealed required savings of 3.9% for the 2011-12 financial year, which was lower than many other councils.

MP for Newquay & St Austell, Steve Gilbert, said: “The funding settlement for local government displays the lack of judgement shown by the Council. Just last week they put the cart before the horse, announcing 10% cuts.

“Now, we find out that the Council will receive substantially more funding than expected. Cornwall Council must think again to reassess their plans and protect vital front line services.”

North Cornwall MP Dan Rogerson added: “I am still concerned about the approach taken by the Council’s cabinet. While there need to be savings, the Council has acted with undue haste.

“I am pleased, however, that the decision to opt for unitary local government has resulted in lower cuts in Cornwall than will bite in other parts of the country.”
