A leading Cornish engineering firm has recruited 20 new members of staff and is primed for further growth after securing a £50k grant from the GAIN Growth Fund.

St Columb-based Hydra (South West) Ltd is aiming to win new business, thanks to new equipment purchased with the support of the funding.

The grant is one of 32 awards totalling £3 million, which have been made from the GAIN Growth Fund to south west businesses.

Established 20 years ago as a tool-making business, Hydra now employs nearly 100 people and offers a wide range of design services and engineering solutions, including expertise in water screening.

Adrian Dawson, head of GAIN projects and partnerships, said: “Over the last 20 years, Hydra has successfully transformed itself from a two-man tool-making business to a major employer in the region with a growing national client base.

“The specialist field in which Hydra operates means that the firm needs the best equipment in order to compete at a national level. By assisting the business to buy specialist kit, the GAIN Growth Fund is enabling the firm to bid for new work.

“This will not only help Hydra pitch for new work, but will also create new jobs for Cornwall.”
