Local MP Stephen Gilbert has expressed his sympathy to those hit by the job losses announced this week at West Pharmaceutical Services’ facility in St Austell.

The company, which makes rubber products including components for syringes, is to shed 220 posts over the next two years, following the loss of a contract which is due to expire in 2012.

The South West RDA, together with the Council and JobCentre Plus, are to offer a range of measures to help those affected find new work.

Gilbert said: “It is obviously a sad day that West Pharmaceuticals have taken this decision which will be the worst possible Christmas present for the hundreds of people who are affected.

“My job now is to ensure that those who have lost their jobs are given as much support as possible to find new work and to ensure that they and their families are not left out in the cold at this time of year.

“I welcome the steps already taken by the Regional Development Agency, Cornwall Council and JobCentre Plus to provide assistance in everything from information on jobs available, to how to fill in a CV.

“Over the coming weeks, I will work with those agencies, and others, to provide any further help and support which I can through my role as the local MP.”
