Richard Bower, MBE, well known local environmental spokesman and Cornwall’s popular “green ambassador”, has set up a new business with his wife Lesley to help companies go green.
They have been appointed distributors for the South West by Jutexpo, the UK’s largest supplier of environmentally-friendly jute bags. Jutexpo’s customers include all the major supermarkets, independent retailers, national charities, local authorities, universities, libraries and schools.
The company, based in Bodmin, is called Jutexpo South West and supplies bespoke bags to local businesses and other organisations throughout the region. Richard commented: “We are committed to offering exemplary customer care. We pride ourselves on the advice we can offer customers to help them choose the best option for their individual needs, including smaller orders.
“The campaign to get rid of plastic bags is growing all the time as more and more towns across the UK decide to kick them out. Consequently the demand for our environmentally-friendly jute bags is growing constantly too.
“It is our hope to reduce the amount of plastic waste destined for landfill, reduce the amount of petroleum based products (because it’s running out) and help to reduce plastic as a major constituent of litter,” Richard added.
Before setting up the new eco business, Richard had a long career in senior positions in both the public and private sector concerning waste management and recycling. His many achievements have been widely recognised, culminating in the National Recycling Officer of the Year Award in 2001, a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and his MBE in 2007.
He has been featured regularly in the waste management industry trade press, as well as becoming a “green ambassador” for Cornwall with many newspaper reports, radio and TV interviews.
Lesley has a similar background, having worked for many years for the Environment Agency on a range of awareness and promotional campaigns.
With their combined experience and encyclopedic knowledge of environmental issues, Richard and Lesley were the ideal candidates for the role Jutexpo needed to fill in the South West.
