From candles to ship parts and fudge to fine arts, Cornish businesses are discovering how simple and affordable it can be to break into overseas markets and win new customers.

Export logistics expert John Harvey hopes more business people in Cornwall will take up the opportunity to attend a series of complementary workshops throughout June to gain an insight into global markets and the confidence to tap the trading opportunities

Harvey, of Helston-based warehousing and distribution company 3B International, said logistics is not as complicated as smaller companies may think but it is often cited as a major barrier to them exporting.

He said: “There’s a perception and fear, particularly on the logistics side of things, that it will be really difficult and expensive. The truth is that there is a wealth of experience and knowledge on hand to make logistics simpler and affordable.

“The range of products we help to export from Cornwall is endless – food, drink, ceramics, glass, huge shipping containers. We send tea to China and fudge to Australia. It is possible to get just about anything from A to B.”

A series of Export Cornwall events is being held in June to provide the business community in the Duchy with practical guidance and support on a range of topics from an introduction to export procedures, classification of goods and international trade documentation to a workshop on the vital skill of negotiating.

The workshops have been organised by Export Cornwall, as part of an international business support programme, on behalf of UK Trade and Investment.

Export Cornwall chair, David Bone, said: “There is an enormous global demand for quality goods produced in Cornwall, but many of the county’s businesses are not taking advantage of this. These workshops are intended to encourage and inform those who have not yet discovered how accessible these new markets are and how much ongoing practical support is available to get them started or hone their existing skills.”
