The shortlist for the 2014 Cornwall Sustainability Awards has been announced.

The aim of Cornwall Sustainability Awards is to encourage, reward and gain recognition for the work businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are doing to improve their own sustainability and that of the area as a whole.

Of the registrations received this year, 74% of all entrants were applying for the awards for the first time.

Co-organiser, Veryan Jones from Cornwall Council, said: “We tried a new approach to generate interest for the awards this year.

“We used video case studies of previous winners, as well as more promotion through social media, and an applications workshop, which worked incredibly well for us.

“It was great to receive so many entries from new applicants, especially in the food category, which is new this year.”

Co-organiser, Gitty Ankers MBE from the Environment Agency, said: “The quality of the entries this year has shown that there are some excellent businesses doing some brilliant work to be more sustainable.

“As usual, the judging day was tough and there were many discussions about the merits of each business.

“What is good is the number of new applicants, who didn’t make the shortlist this year, but who we can work with over the next 12 months to help them improve their practices even more and be winners soon.”

The winners will be announced at the award ceremony, which takes place on Thursday, December 4 at the Headland Hotel, Newquay.
