On Friday we heard about Looe Music Festival’s shortlisting in the creative category, but it is also in line for an award for Best Digital Marketing.

Event director, Tanya Brittain, is delighted with the double nomination: “Ta-dah! Shortlisted for two awards… Cornwall Business Awards dinner here we come. We love throwing fabulous events, but other people’s parties are the best fun!”

She faces tough competition, however, in the form of Wadebridge-based Schoolscapes, recognising its cost-effective use of online techniques to counteract the effects of the financial crisis; and the Watergate Bay Hotel, for its work to bring its free Polo on the Beach event to a wider audience.

The hotel’s MD, Will Ashworth, says: “Now in its eighth year, Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach remains a free event for all. Our digital campaign has helped us reach a large audience as cost effectively as possible, so we’re really pleased to be nominated in this exciting category.”

There is no shortage of family-run enterprises in Cornwall, with three of the best in the running to be crowned Best Family Business.

It is a second consecutive nomination in the category for The Brian Etherington Meat Company, while Cornwall Glass & Glazing, which employs more than 200 people across 15 branches, has also been named a finalist.

The winner will come from either one of those or two, or either St Erth-based South West Laundry Services.

Started in 1996 by father and son team Tony and Wayne Retallack – and joined by sister and daughter Julie Perkin – the firm has grown to be Cornwall’s leading family-run commercial linen service.

Not one to shy away from a pun, Julie Perkin says: “Upon being shortlisted, we thought we might clean up at the Awards… before steaming in to iron out a proposal for St Mellion’s laundry contract!”

The Cornwall Business Awards will be held at St Mellion on Thursday, May 15. For details of other events taking place during Cornwall Business Week, click here.
