One of the country’s leading experts on health and the environment will be guest speaker at this year’s Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

Professor Lora Fleming

Based at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in Truro, Professor Lora Fleming MD PhD MPH MSc is director of the European Centre for Environment and Human Health.

Professor Fleming will give the keynote speech at the award ceremony, which takes place on Friday, December 9 at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge.

Event organiser, Gitty Ankers MBE, from the Environment Agency said: “We’re very excited to have one of the country’s, if not the world’s, leading experts on health and the environment.

“The work Professor Fleming and her team at the European Centre are doing in Cornwall represents the cutting edge of understanding the link between human health and the environment so it will be great to find out how it is developing.”

With over two decades experience Professor Fleming works in areas including the Blue Gym, marine and freshwater toxins and coastal pathogens.

Professor Fleming said: “I’m very much looking forward to this year’s awards.

“It’s great to see so many businesses in Cornwall taking action to become sustainable, as well as thinking about the health of their staff.”

Businesses and individuals from across the county are competing in the competition’s seven categories: Best Managed Company (small, medium and large), Low Carbon Business, Sustainable Procurement, Products and Services, Best Individual, Sustainable Construction (new build and retro-fit) and for the first time, the Healthy Workplace award.

The results of the awards will once again be announced by TV presenter Dick Strawbridge MBE.
