An online Cornish fishmonger has picked up five Gold Star ratings at the UK’s most renowned food awards – the Great Taste Awards (GTAs) 2010.

The 2010 GTAs attracted a record number of entries, with 6,021 food and drink products blind-tasted, tested and discussed during two months of intense judging by 350 judges, comprising food writers, chefs, deli and farm shop owners, food producers and buyers.

Just 1,576 products received the much-coveted Gold Star rating, five of which were entries from online fresh fish shop The Cornish Fishmonger, run by Rob Wing, owner of fish merchant Wing of St Mawes.

Three of the five Gold Star rated products were awarded two Gold Stars – Organic Oak Smoked Salmon, Hot Oak Smoked Salmon and Slow Smoked Wild Sea Caught Crevettes. One Gold Star was awarded to both the Hot Smoked Cornish Mackerel and the Slow Hot Oak Smoked River Fowey Mussels.

Commenting on the success, Wing said: “We have been selling fresh fish for more than 25 years. I’ve been a fisherman, worked in fish processing and now I sell some of the best Cornish fish all over the UK.

“thecornishfishmonger.co.uk is a relatively new part of the business so I am absolutely thrilled that we can now boast five award winning smoked seafoods which can be ordered online and delivered to customers’ doors the very next day.”

“I hope this will encourage even more people to try our fresh Cornish fish and taste the quality for themselves.”
