WC Rowe managing director Alan Pearce has been crowned Baker of the Year at the annual Baking Industry Awards.

Pearce’s efforts were recognised in front of almost 800 industry guests at a gala awards ceremony at London’s Park Lane Hilton last night, as he was presented with his award by comedian Ronnie Corbett and Adrian Roberts, commercial director of award sponsor Vandemoortele.

As well as supplying Tesco and Morrisons, under Pearce’s guidance, Penryn-based WC Rowe has helped put Cornwall on the culinary map. Over the past nine years, the previously single-shop business has grown to two bakeries and 18 shops.

Judges from award sponsor Vandemoortele and other independent panellists were particularly impressed with Pearce’s continued dedication to the company, where he started out as an apprentice before moving up the ranks to become a director and then MD.

Sylvia Macdonald, editor of awards organiser British Baker magazine, said: “Alan’s enthusiasm and passion for baking, coupled with his unstinting dedication to WC Rowe, make him a very worthy winner.”

Pearce said: “I live and breathe bakery, and my motivation is always to improve. At WC Rowe everyone takes pride in what we turn out.”

The annual Baking Industry Awards are the premier event in the UK bakery calendar and have been recognising industry excellence for 22 years.
