Former Proper Cornish and Imerys financial controller has joined expanding accountancy firm Harland Accountants as its new St Austell office practice manager.

Local boy Guy Bawden qualified in accounting and finance from Nottingham Business School in 1998 and has worked for a range of blue-chip companies including MCI WorldCom Ltd and Agilent Technologies (Hewlett Packard) in accounting roles.

He will head up a team of 12 offering core accountancy, taxation and compliance work as well as a specialist service in securing grant funding and capital for clients’ businesses and organisations.

Bawden commented: “Getting hold of investment capital can be problematic even for established firms and the credit crunch has made it especially difficult for many businesses to expand. But money is available; you just need to know where to look.”

One of his roles at Proper Cornish was to secure finance from a range of sources, which has helped the company to become one of the most successful pasty manufacturers in the UK.

At Harland Accountants, Bawdeb will work under managing partner and owner David Harland who took over the firm from his father two years ago having previously held the role of Division Finance Director for healthcare specialists Priory Healthcare (The Priory).

Harland said: “Guy has as extraordinary good depth of industry knowledge and has worked in senior positions for a cross-section of organisations from Cornwall Council to MCI WorldCom and Proper Cornish.

“I am therefore delighted to welcome Guy on board as practice manager for our St Austell office and look forward to adding his specialist skills to our portfolio.”

In the last three years Harland Accountancy has expanded its staff from six to 20, which is spread across the St Austell and newly-opened Liskeard and Falmouth offices. The firm has introduced new training opportunities, with many employees now achieving advanced qualifications.
