Apprentice of the Year Deborah Cortes with Ron Champion

A Truro woman has been named Cornwall College Business  (CCB) Apprentice of the Year at her recent graduation ceremony.

Deborah Cortes, 25, from Threemilestone, won the award for her commitment in completing the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Level 4 qualification as an evening student, whilst also holding down a full time job at healthcare consultancy, MJ Medical.

Her employer, Claire Ugalde from MJ Medical, said: “The apprenticeship for the AAT qualification has enhanced Debbie’s capacity to undertake additional duties, and also has increased her ability to add value to the business through an increased commercial awareness.”

Cortes was presented with her award by head of Cornwall College Business, Ron Champion, at the recent professional studies graduation.

Helen Opie, head of professional studies at Cornwall College, commented: “The choice of the overall winner of this award was difficult as we have many high calibre candidates and all our students work hard to attain the AAT qualification. However, Deborah stood out for her consistently positive and dedicated attitude towards her studies throughout the whole of the AAT course. The AAT teaching team are proud of Deborah’s achievement and of the example she sets for new students.”
