China clay company Imerys has announced that it is cutting 54 jobs, 43 of them in Cornwall.

Imerys also said that it was implementing pay freezes and possible reductions in its working week, in response to current market conditions.

The company’s HR manager, Jeremy Barnard, said: “No-one could have foreseen the scale of the global downturn and the impact it would have on businesses such as ours. It is essential that we respond to market conditions to ensure the long-term future of the business and our employees.”

It is hoped that the job cuts will be made through early retirement and voluntary redundancy.
