CSA Awards Group 8739

The deadline for entering the 2015 Cornwall Sustainability Awards is fast approaching.

Sustainable businesses from across all sectors in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have until Monday, October 19 to submit their application.

Companies will be able to compete in 11 categories, with the awards will be presented at a special evening celebration at the Headland Hotel in Newquay, on December 4.

And to help you along with your application and maximise your chance of success, here are some helpful hints, direct from the judges:

Give yourself plenty of time

Applications that come out on top are those that have been considered carefully, and not left to a last minute cut and paste job. Keep an eye on our website for any changes or extensions to the deadline, and most importantly don’t fall at the last hurdle by being late!

Use the right language

Write your entry in plain English; don’t bury your application in technical jargon.  Remember, the judges may never have heard of your business so providing some background information is key. Bullet points are also a great way to get your point across in short.

Include impact and results

Your business may be the most sustainable company in the world, but without substantiating your claims with the impact your efforts have had the judges may find it hard to evaluate your success. Remember to be clear about your activities, outcomes and how they link to sustainability.

Use facts, figures and statistics

Don’t shy away from the facts and figures behind your company’s sustainability. Nothing beats compelling data in showcasing your achievements and making your application stand apart from the rest.

Have your evidence at the ready

Be prepared to back up any statements you may have made in your application.  For example, you may have cited an environmental policy, in which case we might ask for a copy after you submit your entry.

Show your sustainability

Don’t forget, you may also include up to three photographs alongside your application to further demonstrate your business and its sustainability. Writing not your thing? Then apply with a video!

Don’t be humble!

If you’re proud of your sustainable achievements within your business, shout about it! Show you passion and highlight the areas that you think your company does best.

Proof read

Check it, check it, and check it again. Judges don’t like spelling mistakes and bad punctuation. The more you care about your application the more the judges will. Share the load and get others to read over it too.
