Peter McGahan and Stephane Delourme at the Brandenburg Gate after completing the Berlin Marathon
Less than a year after completing the New York Marathon, a Cornish businessman has successfully tackled 26.2 miles in another historic city.
Together with Rick Stein’s head chef Stephane Delourme, Worldwide Financial Planning MD Peter McGahan returned from Germany after taking part in the Berlin Marathon.
Finishing at the historic Brandenburg Gate, McGahan clocked up a time of 3 hours 54 minutes, with Delourme trailing close behind in 4 hours and 28 seconds.
“New York was such a fantastic experience with over two and half million people lining the streets, but Berlin really held its own,” said McGahan.
“It’s quite a different run and a lot flatter which should certainly have helped us achieve much faster times than last year.
“It was amazing to see the sites in a city that has so much history and to finish at the Brandenburg Gate was incredible.”
The duo were part of a group of eight business people who ran the New York Marathon in 2008 and raised over £20k for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Delourme said: “I think the one aspect that surprised us the most was how hot it was on the day. 25 degrees was too hot for a marathon and put paid to any thoughts of a fast time.
“We had to keep well hydrated around the course, which I think helped our recovery as we both felt less aches than we did after New York.”
The pair are now planning their next adventure and are considering tackling the marathons in seven Celtic nations including Cornwall, Wales, Brittany, Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man and Galicia in Northern Spain in 2010.
