Final hole drama at Worldwide tournament

Months of competition came down to the final hole as the winner of the 2009 Worldwide Financial Planning Business Services Golf League was crowned.
Thirty members of Cornwall’s business community battled it out throughout the summer, but it was Lloyds TSB business development manager, Phil Wilkes, who took the title.
The final, which took place at Perranporth Golf Club, saw Wilkes narrowly beat last year’s champion, Andrew Prouse from St Austell-based accountants Philips Frith on the last hole.
“It has been a really exciting summer of golf,” said event organiser and independent financial adviser at Worldwide, Matt Higham.
“For a long time we thought Andrew would retain his title, but Phil kept pulling out some great results.”
Now in its second year the league had over 30 golfers from Cornwall’s business community taking part in the competition and took in most of the county’s courses.
“The standard of golf this year was very high, but more importantly the league is a way of business people getting to know and understand each other better and how we can work together more effectively during these difficult economic times,” said Higham.
Wilkes was presented with his winner’s trophy and shield by Higham and Prouse at Skinners Brewery.
Peter McGahan, Worldwide’s managing director, said: “It’s great seeing the enthusiasm Cornish companies offer for friendly competitions like this.
“I hope next year firms encourage more of their staff to take part, because there is not only the health benefits to consider, but also the potential for networking that is on offer.”
