A driving force in one of the westcountry’s most prominent health-related charities is standing down as chairman after serving six years in the post and overseeing millions of pounds in grants to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Cornwall.

During Michael Galsworthy’s tenure, the Duchy Health Charity has backed scores of organisations working in the field of healthcare – along with major projects including a £892k grant to the Knowledge Spa at the Peninsula Medical School in Truro and £783k to a pilot project creating Integrated Health Centres at three Cornish secondary schools.

“My time in the chair of the Duchy Health Charity has given me a real sense of being able to help other people,” Galsworthy said. “It has been a tremendous privilege and pleasure.

“A community like Cornwall needs help in all sorts of ways. Ours is not a wealthy community so each and every grant of around ten to twenty thousand pounds makes an enormous difference to whether a really worthwhile project can continue.”

“There’s no question that Michael will be missed,” added Robert Robins, President of the Duchy Health Charity and a retired orthopaedic surgeon. “He has been an incisive, innovative leader and as Trustees we have all valued his boundless drive and enthusiasm.”
