World class designers and Cornish school pupils are setting their creative minds to problem-solving and helping the planet – in an Eco Design Challenge.

Product designer Sebastian Conran is among the big names signed up as mentors for this environmental quest, with 24 secondary schools already working on the challenge and two weeks still left for other schools to get involved.

The Eco Design Challenge is led by Dott Cornwall – the Design Council’s one-year “Designs of the Time” initiative run in partnership with Cornwall Council, University College Falmouth and the Technology Strategy Board.

Leap Media’s Matt Hocking, who is leading the Challenge for Dott, explained: “First we are giving students and their project leaders the tools with which they can work out their school’s carbon footprints – how much water they use, how much of their waste goes to landfill and so on. Then, working with some top national and local design talent, they’ll be coming up with ways of reducing their school’s impact on the environment.”
