Pirate FM has won the Award for Excellence in People Development in the South West and will go forward to compete for the national crown at this year’s British Chambers of Commerce Awards in London.

Despite the very difficult economic climate during the last 12 months, the radio station has retained its key clients, kept costs under control, grown its market share and had little staff turnover. Bosses believe this is due to the investment they have made in their people and the individual approach they adopt to helping staff flourish at their own pace to achieve their full potential.

Regional judges were unanimous in their decision, all agreeing Pirate FM is a people driven company, with clear objectives and a plan of how to achieve them.

John Dunsmure, managing director of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “Despite the difficult economic climate, businesses across the country are continuing to succeed, overcoming obstacles by adopting innovative ideas and motivating their people. Pirate FM is a great example of the very best of UK business and I wish the team success in the national finals.”

Cornwall Chamber chief executive Richard Glover feels that this is a well-deserved award and said: “Pirate has won numerous awards in recent years and earlier this year was deemed outstanding and awarded a 2 star accreditation by the Sunday Times Best Companies to work for. It is great for us that our members are recognised by the national Chamber body.”

Clinching the national Award for Excellence in People Development, which is sponsored by fdf (Foundation Degree Forward) means that Pirate FM has a chance to collect the ‘Winner of Winners’ £50k cash prize. This goes to the category winner that judges believe stands out from the rest.

There are eight categories, backed by high profile sponsors including the Royal Bank of Scotland, BT, Staples, Dell, AXA PPP Healthcare, Westfield Health and AVG Technologies.

The national winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Maritime Museum in London on November 26.
