One of Cornwall’s oldest businesses scooped the Overall Winner award at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards at the Royal Cornwall Showground on Friday afternoon.

With intense competition coming from other category winners including Primrose Valley, Nature Paint, St Columb Minor School, MPAD and Trelowarren Estate; St Austell Brewery, which has remained in the heart of St Austell for over 150 years, was recognised for the exceptional lengths it has gone to in managing its own environmental impacts and supporting the local community.

The brewery also won the Best Managed Large Business category sponsored by Jaspers abattoir, where it came third last year. James Staughton, managing director of St Austell Brewery, said: “St Austell Brewery is one of the region’s oldest companies and through innovation we have managed to remain at the top of our game for more than a century and a half.

“Operating sustainably is not only essential for our future but for all business and we are therefore delighted to be recognised for this as well as our voluntary work, which keeps our ties with the local St Austell community strong.”

TV environmentalist Dick Strawbridge, who returned to present the 2009 awards again this year as well as being on the judging panel said: “I was delighted to give this award to St Austell Brewery not only because I like the occasional pint of Tribute but because of the level of work that goes into making breweries sustainable and in St Austell Brewery’s case, supporting its local community through its Charitable Trust Fund.”

A special award for Longstanding Commitment to Sustainability in Cornwall sponsored by Business Link was also presented to Bedknobs B&B and Learn English in Cornwall in recognition for their consistent and long term work in promoting sustainability throughout the county.

The Cornwall Sustainability Awards 2009 was sponsored and organised by Cornwall Council, the Environment Agency, Business Link, BREW (Business Resource, Efficiency and Waste), Community Energy Plus, Cornwall College Business, Environmental Skills Network, Jaspers and the Energy and Environment Group (Wardell Armstrong International).

The Cornwall Sustainability Awards is also supported by Global Action Plan, COAST, Cornwall Sustainable Building Trust (CSBT), Groundwork, ReZolve, Atlantic FM and Finisterre.
