Former actnow director Nigel Ashcroft has been presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Technology by the University of Plymouth.

As director of the highly successful actnow project, which was a flagship investment for Objective One, Ashcroft played a key role in the roll out of high speed broadband access across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

He joined 17 others being presented with Honorary Doctorates during the University of Plymouth Graduation Week 2009. Among those were pioneering polar explorer Pen Hadow, award-winning singer-songwriter Seth Lakeman; and BBC camerawoman turned plastic bag campaigner Rebecca Hosking

Carleen Kelemen, director of the Convergence Partnership Office for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said: “Warmest congratulations to Nigel on this well deserved recognition for his role in delivering broadband across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Nigel held the reigns of both phases of actnow and took on the challenges of delivery with energy and commitment. actnow was a groundbreaking project both locally, nationally and internationally. The engagement of our businesses of Cornwall and the strategic vision of BT and our partners are all recognised in the bestowment of Nigel’s award.”

The presentations were made by Professor Wendy Purcell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Plymouth, a partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall.
