Store doubles in size

Some 2,500 chickens in the Penryn area are among the growing list of fans of a country supplies shop that is doubling in size after only three years of trading.
Bailey’s Country Store, in Eastwood Road, Penryn, has gathered pace in sales of gardening and pet supplies, clothing and hardware, since husband-and-wife team Simon and Emma Bailey set up the store in 2006.
The relaunched store will include a farm shop aimed at providing a real option for local people to use well-priced local produce. This will stock a full range of Cornish meats, locally-grown vegetables and dairy produce.
From records of sales to poultry smallholders and people who keep chickens at home, Simon Bailey has worked out that Bailey’s is currently supporting the feeding of about 2,500 chickens a week in the local area.
The Baileys, who have grown the shop by annexing the neighbouring industrial unit, are hosting a celebratory open day on Saturday, December 12, to thank their customers for their support over the last three years.
The secret to the Baileys’ success, believes Simon, is to do with the positive attitude of the owners and staff and the friendly way they relate to their customers.
“When we took on the building, it was empty and we didn’t have any customers at all,” explained Simon. “It was a very exciting time, to say the least.
“Our plan has been to provide the best service to our customers and we’re fortunate that they’ve been very loyal to us. That’s one reason we wanted to hold our open day, to say ‘thank you’.”

This is really good news for Penryn – we currently have nowhere permanent to buy local meat or veg, although we do have two great fish shops and a fantastic deli with loads of local cheese. Really looking forward to being able to buy Cornish meat just a couple of minutes’ walk from my house!
