Editor’s blog: The Sun sets on Labour

Editorial director Nick Eyriey is an experienced and respected journalist having spent some 20 years in the local and national press working with newspapers such as The Yorkshire Post, Today, The Sun, and the Mail on Sunday.

The Labour Party conference dominated much of the national news headlines this week. But to the chagrin of Gordon Brown and his colleagues, the debate was not so much about his ‘rousing back from the dead’ speech, but rather The Sun’s thunder-stealing announcement that it was no longer rooting for Labour.

As timing goes, it was pretty effective barnstorming. The majority of the debate across the national media the following day did not focus on the substance of Brown’s speech, but rather the rights or wrongs of The Sun’s decision to put its backing behind the Tories.

It’s the Conservatives’ turn to go to conference next week, of course, but I doubt somehow whether the Daily Mail will be delivering a Sun-like blow to David Cameron. Business Cornwall will be keeping its own political leanings between itself and the ballot box!

But back to the PM’s speech, someone was listening Gordon, don’t worry, and it was gratifying to hear about your plans for developing the green economy, and the important role that our very own Eden Project has to play in it.

And it provides further proof, it were needed, of the talent we have in Cornwall. But even so, it is still encouraging when it is recognised by central Government.

And on the subject of business excellence, Business Cornwall magazine is on the search for Cornwall’s most influential business leaders and will be publishing Cornwall’s Top 20 in an upcoming issue.

And we’re looking for your help. Who do you think should be on that list? We’re not just looking for bosses of Cornwall’s largest companies, but rather those movers and shakers who are leaving a real impression on the Duchy’s business sector.
